Bloodborn: "The Scientist's Daughter"

Excerpt

Evie stared out between the bars of the cage, her cheek pressed to its dirty bottom. She wondered if her father was in the room, but barely had the strength to keep her eyes open, never mind lift her head. She hadn’t seen him since he came in with his coffee, sipping calmly while his assistant stuck the needle in her arm and put more of her blood into several vials. She used to count them, but stopped when she started feeling worse.

She sighed and closed her eyes.

She heard the door unlock and opened her eyes. Her father carried a tray to her cage and set the glass of pig’s blood just outside of the bars.

“Did you have a good nap, Pumpkin?” He smiled at her, but his eyes looked dull in the florescent light and didn’t quite meet hers.

She lifted her head and reached for the glass. It felt lukewarm. He’d never brought it to her so late before. She brought it to her lips, took a sip and grimaced, then gulped it down. Instantly she felt more alert. She sat up and smiled at him, exposing the sharp teeth she never had Before. “Hi, Daddy.”

He looked down at the floor, and she closed her lips. “That’s better, Pumpkin,” he said, looking up.

She scooted closer to the door of the cage and held the glass out to him. “Can I go outside now, Daddy? I want to see Markie’s new bike before he gets tired of it!”
