I'm Getting a Hurricane for My Birthday

Update, 12:40am, 08/30: For those of you who don’t have Twitter and are wondering, my family and I are all safe. We’re going on forty-eight hours without power, but we’re managing just fine. I’ll post a full update as soon as we get power (typing on my phone is cumbersome at best, painful on my hands at worst). :)

Hurricane Irene is coming to visit me.

Hurricane Irene is coming to visit me.

Hurricane Irene is forecast to hit Connecticut — where I live — at about 5pm EST on Sunday night… and Sunday happens to be my birthday. Even the spaghetti forecast — an estimation of all of the possible paths Irene could take — shows that no matter which way it goes, Irene is coming to visit me.

At first, I wasn’t taking it seriously because, come on, CT never gets anything more than a little rain when there’s a hurricane. Governor Asshole — I mean, Malloy — declared a state of emergency, though, and my sister’s school is advising that after moving in on Saturday, students go directly home and return Monday for class.

I realize this hurricane could be nasty — they’re saying it could hit us at Category 1 — but damn, why does it have to be on my birthday? I think I have every right to whine. ;)

If you’re in Irene’s path on her way to visit me, make sure you’re prepared. CT put together a little minisite with tips and announcements related to the hurricane, but I also found a few more links I thought I’d share.

Fun times.

My first priority this weekend is my cat; if we have to evacuate, she is the first “thing” I’m grabbing. I’m also packing a little bag, just in case, and we’re getting water and some other supplies together. We’ll most likely be hanging out downstairs on the first floor with Noni and Biz Noni on Sunday, since our roof, um, leaks, and we’re on the third floor.

I’ll make sure to keep updating on Twitter in case we do get hit, that way you guys know I’m alive and stuff, but I’m not too too worried. I just feel like we’re better off being safe rather than sorry. If you’re in Irene’s path, too, please stay safe. Let’s hook up on Twitter so that we can keep each other updated, okay? I’m @elizabethbarone.

Also, if anyone in the Naugatuck Valley area knows of pet friendly emergency shelters — like the Red Cross or something — can you let me know? We have two cats and they’re very important to us.

Update, 7:44pm, 08/25: NYT put together a tracker to show Irene’s path, and via reliable news sources on Twitter, I’ve learned that New Jersey is asking all Jersey Shore residents to voluntarily leave the area for the time being, NYC is shutting down all public transportation from Saturday afternoon and on, and Connecticut is closing all state parks and campgrounds. Stay safe, guys. This is starting to worry me a little.

Update, 11:09pm, 08/25: Check out this satellite image showing the size of Irene; it’s 1/3 the size of the East Coast! #holyshit

Update, 12:55pm, 08/26: Still getting a hurricane for my birthday, wahoo! As of 11:45 this morning, the National Hurricane Center said that we’ll be getting hit with a Category I on Sunday morning. So basically, I get to wake up to this shit.

Here’s what we’re doing to prepare:

  • Put some water into containers (because why buy it when it comes just fine out of your faucet right now)
  • Reinforce the shaky windows in the house with plexiglass
  • Charge up our cell phones Saturday night
  • Get ready to camp out in our living room; if we lose power, we’ll be cooking out (after the storm, obviously)

No biggy. What are you doing to prepare?

Update, 1:29am, 08/28: As of 1:15am, we’re still looking at “welcoming” Irene into Connecticut sometime tomorrow morning, with the edges of the storm hitting us at about two this morning. Everyone else in my house is asleep. Ironically, yesterday I was telling my friend to not panic and that we’d all be fine, but now I’m getting nervous. Our roof started leaking a few hours ago, and we don’t even have wind or really heavy rain yet. Please keep your fingers that the roof holds out!

Other than that, I’m enjoying Lungs, the Florence + the Machine album that Mom and Dad got me for my birthday. And, even though I was born at 5:18am today, I’m celebrating my twenty-third birthday by listening to it. Mom and I had vodka and cranberry drinks earlier, and there’s plenty more for later today when we lose power (since we’re anticipating losing it).

I’ve been doing my best to check on everyone on Twitter, and will continue to update from my phone on both Twitter and here, if need be. Be safe, everyone! We’ll get through this. ♥

Shit that pisses me off: Weird dreams and chronic pain edition

I’ve always wanted to make a list of the shit that’s currently pissing me off, but never did because it somehow feels douche-y. Still, sometimes you just need to rant, so here we are.

I don’t understand why the new year starts in January. It’s confusing. It should start in March. Hear me out. We get winter starting at the end of the year, and it overlaps into the beginning of the year. So, if we want to refer to the winter of a particular year, how do we do that? If I say “Winter 2011,” am I talking about the winter in the beginning of the year, or the winter at the end of the year?

Our cats have been living together for over a year now and the fat one is still traumatizing my little one. After I spent the whole morning yesterday cleaning up puke, piss, and shit because Apollo wouldn’t let Squirt leave the corner to use the litter box, I felt like wringing his little neck. I told my mom when she got home from work. We said how we wished that the dining room door closed, and a little while later she rigged the dining room door with a bungee cord so that he can’t get in. She’s a smart cookie.

Since Mom rigged the door and we’ve been keeping the cats separated, I’ve seen a complete change in Squirt. She’s much more relaxed. She even purred at a normal volume last night when I was petting her. I also saw her use the litter box for the first time in a year without a hassle.

Apparently, pulling the bungee cord around the doorknob is too hard for my dad and sister, because they keep complaining about it. My dad also keeps complaining that this isn’t going to help them get along. They are never going to get along. It’s been over a year. If they were going to get along, they would have already started to. They are both the type of cat that has to be a single pet. Again, let me remind you that I cleaned up puke, piss, and shit all morning, and that every night they fight right over my head because her food is right near the head of my bed, and he doesn’t let her eat. If keeping the peace in the house means that we have to loop a bungee cord around the doorknob every time we go in and out, who cares? But I have a feeling that when I leave for Kaylene’s birthday party and then come home, the dining room door is going to be open and it’s going to be the same shit all over again because no one cares.

I don’t understand why we can’t all just be consistent. Aside from this, I’m the only one who ever punishes him for going after her. Mom puts him in the bathroom sometimes, but I’m the only one who sprays him with the water bottle and tries to teach him to listen to the word “NO.” It’s so frustrating.

I’m sick of being broke. I want to not worry about gas and lunch. I want to go out with friends I haven’t seen in a long time. I want friends who stopped inviting me out because I’m always broke to invite me out again. I want to pay off my bills and the debt that’s been stacking up. I want to start saving money for a place with Mike. I want to fix my car up so that it’s in top condition. I want to buy birthday presents for the birthdays I’ve missed so far: Kaylene’s, Lauren’s, and Mike’s mom’s. I cannot wait until March 4th, when I get my first full check.

I wish some of my so-called friends would get serious about our friendship. We make plans, they break them. I try to get in touch, they don’t call me back. I need someone to talk to, they just talk about themselves. Something important happens to them, they don’t tell me. (But when something bad happens to them, oh, you can bet they’re calling or texting or BBMing or emailing me to cry or vent about it!) I can honestly only think of one friend right now who has always been serious about our friendship. That friend? Is a guy. Maybe I am approaching this whole friendship thing wrong, and need to only be friends with guys.

I dreamed about SEO last night, and kept waking up over and over thinking, “I’ve got to remember that!”, only to forget two seconds later. The night before, I dreamed about spiders crawling on me. Before these last two nights, I had a couple of good nights of sleep, but before that I wasn’t really sleeping at all. Sleep hates me. I think my body hates me. I don’t know why I dreamed about SEO last night. It’s not like I had to work today! Maybe I’m stressing out a little about work. I do feel some pressure, but I didn’t think it was bothering me that much. Ugh.

My neck and shoulders have been stiff and sore for a week now, and my lower back has been aching for three or four days. All of my joints have been joining this aching chorus, too. I guess it’s stress, but it’s driving me crazy. There’s only so much Extra Strength Tylenol I can take before I have to give it a rest. Plus, really, no one likes being in pain all the time.

I guess that’s it for now. I need to go get ready for my goddaughter’s birthday party. She turned six on the ninth. Time really flies!

What’s really pissing you off right now?

If I could stop itching, I would probably get more writing done.

Alternate title: “What I spent 1,000+ words on, instead of working on my NaNoWriMo novel.”

Somewhere in the last couple of weeks, I’ve developed a mystery allergy. I’m itchy — all over — with no hives, bites, eczema scales, or anything visible. I get so itchy, at times, that I scratch until I bleed. At first, I thought it was dry skin, but I’ve been using lotion and paying attention throughout the last week, and my skin isn’t actually too dry. (The palms of my hands, on the other hand*, are wicked dry. They don’t itch, though.)

Then I thought it might be the laundry detergent we’re using. I put a little bit on my arm, rubbed it in with a Qtip, and went outside for a cigarette. Aside from being very cold because I couldn’t wear a jacket over my detergent-arm, nothing happened.

I got a little worried because a friend of mine has neighbors with a flea/bedbug/cockroach problem, but I don’t have any bites or marks (other than scratches from scratching so much). My friend and her kids are all fine, though, so I don’t think I could have picked any of it up, either.

Tonight, as I was cleaning out my cat’s brush, it hit me: Maybe I have developed an allergy to my cats’ dander. It would make sense. I pinned down that my bathrobe was making me the most itchy. It is 100% polyester, but none of my other polyester or polyester-blend clothing makes me itch. However, my cat slept on it every night for about a week. I’ve since washed it in hot water, and although I haven’t worn it, I’m willing to bet that it won’t make me itchy anymore. I also washed my sheets, comforter, pillow cases, afghan, and fleece blanket — yes, I sleep with a lot of blankets — recently, and the itching got a little less itchy.

I hate to admit that I could be allergic to my furry little child, but it’s kind of looking like it. I’m having visions of having to give Squirt (my baby) and Apollo (my parents’ baby) a dander bath, and of Squirt clawing my face off because she hates water. (The one and only time we had to give her a flea bath — because the people who gave her to me let their cats go in and outside without ever giving them flea treatments — she was pissed. And this was when she was a kitten; I’d hate to see how she’d react now.)

Blaine — thank you, Blaine! — suggested I try an antihistamine. I need to refill my Claritin-D pretty badly, anyway, so hopefully that will do the trick. I cannot believe I may have developed an allergy to my cats, but I feel lucky that I’m not swelling up or anything.

The other alternative is that Mike is right and it’s dust mites, which creeps me out so badly that I’d rather be allergic to my fuzzball.

I’m so ashamed, I’ve been so mean
“Simple Kind of Life,” No Doubt

This song is pretty close to summing up the last few days for me. I want to go back to Friday and slam my self-absorbed little head into the wall. Okay, so maybe I don’t want to hurt myself, but I’m pretty ashamed of that girl. That is not me, and I am disgusted at my own behavior. I didn’t mean it, at all, but I’m still ashamed.

I’ve been writing like mad. I fell behind for a little bit, and honestly it was partly because I was too tired to write, and partly because I lost faith in my story. A handful of awesome people — Blaine, Jess, Becky, Sanya, and Veronica, to name a few — have been encouraging me to keep going, and have (just today) made me realize that I need to have faith in my story. I’ll be honest: for a little while there, I thought it sucked and that I should stop and do something else. I was afraid that I’d failed to create the strong characters I wanted to create. They’re still not as strong as I’d like them to be, but when Jess BBMed me tonight and told me how much she loved the story and the characters, how strong they are, I said to myself, “You need to trust your story and your own writing; you are doing better than you thought you were.” (I may have actually said, “I need to trust my story…” but most likely, this conversation took place in the third person. Sigh.)

Tonight — or, okay, this morning, apparently; it’s after midnight now — I plan on breaking 13,000 words, but it’s become less about the word count and more about finishing it** and then editing it, because holy shit, there are actually people reading who expect a new chapter every day. I was, in a daydreaming sort of way, entertaining the idea of self-publishing the edited, complete version, but at the time told myself that that would be putting the cart before the horse… Now, it’s still putting the cart before the horse, but it’s a lot less of a daydream and more of a thought; I’m really thinking about it now.

I may be rich with word count and chapters, but I am broke. I just finished a client’s website and am starting a new one, though, and am expecting payment from another client soon, so hopefully in another week or so I won’t have to worry about my bills. I feel horrible that Mike is the only one putting gas into the car, and that I haven’t given my mom money toward our car insurance, and that two major bills are coming up — one of which I’m not sure I can afford at all; it will all depend on how soon I next get paid.

Honestly, I’m kind of thinking of getting a part-time job somewhere. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately, to be honest, but there are a few things that hold me back. I definitely don’t think I could handle two jobs right now. I want to stick this self-employment thing out, really, but the longer I go in this position, the more I miss having that secure weekly or bi-weekly paycheck (among other things). Maybe I should give it until the beginning of the new year, and then decide.

So what’s new with you?

*No pun intended.

**I especially want to finish this because it will only be the second novel I’ve ever actually finished writing. I still haven’t finished The Cure Program or Secondhand Mom. I really suck at finishing things; it has to be done right away, or it gets harder for me to come back to.

To the cat who thinks he is king

Dear Apollo,

You were so cute as a kitten. And I thought that you were a good cat. At least, you were until we brought you upstairs.

Why do you feel the need to chase my cat — you know, the little one — around? I promise you, if you stop terrorizing her, she won’t terrorize you like she did those first couple of days. I think she has learned her lesson. So unless you want to be booted out to the streets, doing sexual favors for tomcats* to finance your rather large appetite, I suggest you leave her alone. And don’t think that just because you’re my mom’s favorite, I won’t do it.

Yours,
The Human with the Spray Bottle

PS: Quit pretending like you are old and slow. You’re only two or three years old. It doesn’t fly with me. I know you are really just lazy and stubborn.

*I would never do that, but man, the thought is tempting — especially when being woken up at the ass crack of dawn to hissing and growling.

Squirt vs Apollo

Pam wasn’t kidding when she said the Seroquel would make me drowsy. I took it at about 12 or 1am, and by 2am I could barely hold my own head up. Today I’ve been pretty lethargic; all I want to do is, well, nothing. She said it would pass after a few days. I’m pretty sure she said it would phase out once I hit the 150mg dosage, which is about five days from now.

I just downed a cup of coffee, though, and I feel a bit more lively now.

Speaking of lively, today’s been an interesting day. Remember how I told you about my living situation? You know: my parents, great-grandmother, and Apollo the cat on the first floor, my great-aunt on the second floor with her cat Charlie, and my sister, grandparents, Squirt the cat, and I on the third floor. My grandparents and parents ended up making the switch, so now Mom, Dad, Lauren, and I live on the third floor, and Noni, Popi, and Biz Noni live on the first.

We decided that we would eventually move Apollo up here, too, but knew that it would be rough because Squirt? Is Napoleon in disguise. She weighs maybe eight pounds soaking wet, but she’s got tons of attitude to make up for how teeny she is. Apollo, on the other hand, weighs probably two or three times as much as she does, but he is a big baby. Squirt originally belonged to my ex-boyfriend, and his family didn’t treat their cats very well. I found Apollo outside a few years after my ex gave me Squirt. He was a teeny, orphaned kitten, and you could tell that he had been dumped by his original owners.

So we knew that Squirt was pretty much going to push Apollo around. We decided to move him upstairs last night, and it’s been a Mexican standoff since. Right now, we have a door with a glass window standing between them, with him prowling most of her territory. Last night and most of today, she had him cowering in a corner. Even though she is my baby, I felt really bad for him, so I moved his litter and food into the corner with him and as soon as she left the living/dining rooms, we closed the door behind her. Now he is all badass, like, “What, bitch? You can’t touch me now!” Currently he is exploring under my desk and she is sulking in the window in the pantry, I think.

Squirt has always been my buddy, but I couldn’t stand seeing Apollo hiding under a table, not coming out to eat or drink; if he so much as raised his head, she would start to hiss at him, and if he tried to come out, she would charge. She is scary for such a tiny little thing; she has kicked my ass on more than one occasion.

But I love them both. I hope they at least learn to ignore each other.

I need your advice! Have you ever introduced a new pet to your current pets? How did you do it? Did they become friends? Is there hope? Please leave a comment with your pet advice!
