Staycation's over, now back to the real world!

Sometimes, I really hate being an adult. Like when you have to keep your mouth shut even though you are being treated like shit. Or when you make an expensive mistake and have to pay for it, as opposed to when you were a kid and the grownups would be like, “It’s okay, no problem.” And how about the times when you really just want to curl up and cry, but there are too many people watching? Let’s not forget the big, life changing decisions you have to make on your own.

But life goes on, right?

Anyway, my staycation was really good. I spent every possible second with my family, especially since my cousin Mindy came to visit from Pennsylvania. I ignored my blog, Facebook, and (mostly) Twitter. Honestly, I can’t really say I missed it all that much. I’m starting to care less about the internet. (It’s not you — really!) I’ve just started to realize that there are more important things. I’m not really planning on deleting stuff, but I don’t really see myself being as much of a junkie as I was before the last ten or so days.

I wrote another blog post earlier, but can’t post it yet because it’s something I want to discuss with my parents before I talk to you guys about it. But don’t worry, everything’s good. I’ll talk to you all later!

Office supply high

My aunt and I get really excited about office supplies. This is one of the reasons we work so well together. To us, a trip to Staples is like a kid’s trip to Toys R Us. New Post-its, Sharpies, notepads, and tape make us entirely too happy. So tonight, when I go shopping for a printer that I’ve waited four years for, the office supplies high will be intoxicating.

Ah, Staples.

I have finally started on that series of short stories I wrote about two years ago. I mean, I started a couple of them around that time, but never really got into them and never wrote much beyond a couple of paragraphs. Right now, I’m working on a story that I dreamed a few nights ago. I’ve only ever written a story based on a dream I had once, and never finished that story. This story is starting to look like it might end up a novella, though, so I’m going to have to be really careful.

I’ve decided that this series is going to be a series of six stories (instead of ten), all about six different characters living in Tent City — which was a section in the woods behind the railroad tracks near where I work where homeless people lived in tents. I read a newspaper article about it two years ago, and was fascinated by the idea of it. Supposedly, according to the article, the city ordered Tent City dispersed, but there was never anything else about it in the paper (that I saw, anyway). I have no idea whether it still exists or what became of the people living there, but it definitely lives on in my imagination. Reading about Tent City made me realize just how big of a homeless population we have here in Waterbury. I truly hope HUD helped these people like they said they might in that article.

My plan for these stories is to submit them to different writing contests so that I can build up credibility, and then take them to an agent to have them published as a book. When I was doing research for grants and fellowships, I read a testimonial from a woman who had done the same thing, using the grants to fund her submissions. I’m not sure I’ll actually get a grant at this point, but I think what she did was pretty smart, so I’m going to mimic her and hope for the best.

Aside from doing a little writing and making plans regarding my writing, I’ve been thinking about buying a bike. Most likely it’ll be a mountain bike, and I’ll probably ride it around my neighborhood because there are no close bike paths, and I don’t have a bike rack (nor do I feel like buying one and attaching it to my car). I’m thinking the bike will be an incentive to get outside and get moving, because:

  • I used to really like biking when I was younger, especially the summer I spent with my uncle in an Amish town. Lauren, Mindy, and I biked on this path out to this huge, beautiful field every day. There’s nothing like that here, but I still miss biking.
  • It’s exercise that doesn’t involve me trying to talk myself into running. I ran once, and never again, because I couldn’t talk myself into doing something that hard again.
  • If I spend $100 on a bike, I will have to use it, or else I’ll feel guilty and will be mad at myself for a long time for wasting that money. I can say, “Self, you just spent $100 on that bike, so you’d better get the fuck up from in front of the computer and GO RIDE IT!”*

Makes sense, right?

Tomorrow is my last day at work before my vacation starts, and Friday I’m hopefully going to the beach with my aunt and a few other people in our family. We’re going to create a social media marketing schedule for one of our clients while we get some sun, that way we can have a beach day and have a schedule ready for our intern to take over while I am on vacation.

Friday is also the day that my cousin Mindy comes from Pennsylvania. She’ll be visiting for a little over a week. I’m so excited!

So tell me, is there anything coming up that you’re excited about?

*Yeah, I talk to myself — entirely too much, actually.

Vacation is on again!

We’re on for Florida again!

We were going to go, and then we weren’t, and now we are.

When we first decided we weren’t going to go, I’ll admit I was a little bummed but I completely understood why we weren’t going to be able to go. Then we decided not to let what is going on affect us, and we’ve decided to give it a shot. We both really want a vacation. When we decided we weren’t going, I had suggested we could go away for a weekend instead, but I think both of our hearts were set on getting out of the state for over a week instead of going somewhere inside the state for just a couple of days.

I’ve decided to take off the third week of June when my cousin Mindy will be visiting, and I’ll also take off the second week of July so that we can go to Florida. Of course, this all depends on whether my tax return comes in within the next couple of weeks. I’m sure it will, though.

I’m exhausted. I’ve been working pretty much all day. Not counting the short breaks I’ve taken, I’ve literally worked almost twelve hours today!

Random rambling, and a book review!

UPDATE 05/12/2010: I don’t know why everyone thinks I’m mad or ranting or venting in this post! It was just a bunch of random things I was thinking about.

You know how sometimes, you just need to ramble and let random things out? Here goes nothing…

  • Remember how I said I was going to not eat fast food for a month? Yeah, I should have had you guys put money on it, because I totally caved only a week in. You guys could all be $10 richer.
  • My printer won’t print. It refuses. It’s like an obstinate three-year-old.
  • Popi is doing well. He’s growing a beard. His face is covered in silvery hair. He looks so handsome. He stayed overnight in the hospital this weekend and they ran tests to see why he’s been having a fever on and off. They didn’t find anything, so they sent him home. Hopefully the fever doesn’t come back.
  • Mike and I aren’t going on vacation anytime soon. My income tax return has yet to come in, I’m still waiting on a bill from one of my clients, and there are a few other things that we need to take care of. Not to mention that I have to start repaying my student loans — ugh — in July, I still owe the surgical center $100, I have another doctor’s bill for $20… I need a sugar daddy. (; Or maybe a long lost, rich, doting uncle who doesn’t mind loaning me, let’s see… $5,000?
  • My aunt and business partner is on vacation, so I’m manning the ship while she’s away. So far, so good. Tomorrow or Wednesday will probably be really crazy, though.
  • During softball practice today, I hit a home run! My hits and throws are getting much better now. I think I’ve lost some weight, too!
  • I still haven’t had a flareup. Today during practice, my ankles were achy for a while, and then my left arm radiated a little between my elbow and shoulder, but nothing major. Those were the first twinges I’ve had in days. I fully expect the severe pain to return, though; this may be my longest remission period yet, but it always has returned, and usually worse than before.
  • Today I met another blogger who has symptoms similar to mine and has yet to have her mystery autoimmune disease diagnosed. As much as living with this sucks, it’s nice to meet someone who is going through something similar. Plus, Annie is really cool.
  • I finished Eye of the Red Tsar this morning. It was really, really good. I posted a review and a discussion topic over at Freaking Bookworm, so check it out! Who knows, it might end up on your reading list! And speaking of Freaking Bookworm, if you have a book review of your own that you would like to post, shoot me an email! It’s elizawhat at gmail.com.

I’m off to bed. Tomorrow may or may not be a long day.

How are you doing?
